Why all the fuss about the Christian Fellowship,chill out everyone has got thier hobbies and anyone who can turn water into wine has got my vote. Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of people in BH whom appear to not actually like the place! If it's that bad why don't they move elsewhere? Everywhere has its teenagers whom are going through their unruly phase; I was one myself once. If you expect BH to be an idyllic village then you're in the wrong place, it's a suburb of London. You're lucky to have a webmaster who can be bothered to put his time and effort into creating this site, so rather than slagging each other off, why not say something constructive. I'm guaranteed that some small minded individual will reply with some pointless comment, so go for it, I won't lose any sleep about it, I have better things to be worried about!

The re3ason the F&V is poor is because they have the monopoly & there is no pressure as there is no compertition. I suggest that you do as I do....Go to Westerham where there is an excellent Greengrocers or visit Sainsbury's at Locksbottom which is pretty good. Remember though you only have youselves to blame,if more customers had patronised the local shops they would not have closed down,prices in supermarkets are not lower as people assume and you dont get the personel service. Oh and Iam 24,for those of you who might have thought that I was a pensioner.

Tony, I don't want to get involved in a flame war on a public site such as this, but the facts of life are that you can't get something for nothing in this world. 1. How many of these black plastic crates have been manufactured, at what cost and how much of the earths resources have been consumed in their making ? 2. How many of these leaflets have been distributed (hopefully on recycled paper, but it doesn't say so), and how many trees have gone to provide them ? 3. How much petrol/diesel etc is going to be consumed collecting this paper, and how much air/traffic pollution is going to be produced as a result. The quoted figures on the leaflet are impressive, but they don't mention the downside like how many gallons of fuel they've consumed collecting it, levels of particle emissions resulting etc. The best method of saving trees is to cut out junk mail and over packaging in the first place !! By the way...how do you know that I'm lazy...I've never met you? Regards

Err! I came home this evening to find a large black plastic container on my doorstep labelled 'recycle' (or something like that). Apparently its for paper and cardboard articles to be collected every 2 weeks !! I'm not about to leave this 'crate' lying around my relatively small front garden waiting for the local yobs to nick it, or worse still, hurl it through some window. It's also too unsightly to keep indoors. So I guess its got to live in the back garden and get carried out the front every two weeks, if I remember the collection dates !! Whose great idea was this ?? I wonder how much energy has to be expended, and petrol burnt, driving around Biggin Hill to collect the paper??

Hello mister de’vill, or should I say mister fallen angel, I’m not to sure why I’m even bothering to reply to your feeble letter dated the 4th Sept but I feel I could point some things out. First of all, it has come as no surprise to me at all that your back in town, however I would like to ask if you are still hurting from the last time you fled the area. (To which I have no sympathy for you.) I must point out that I have never worn sandals in my life, and I must say they’re a lot more comfortable than the asbestos shoes and under pants that you have to wear. As for the singing, well once upon a time you wrote the best worship songs out, such a shame that you wasted that gift and I’ve heard some of the stuff your inspiring now, tut, tut what rubbish! I already know of the degrading things you make people do and I don’t need to see them, so your idea for a massage parlour is not one of your better ideas. However I’ve never heard a harp played live so perhaps I should try and find someone who plays one. As you rightly pointed out that long haired carpenter did die two thousand years ago, but as you well know he was raised from the dead and defeated you once and for all time. He is however alive and well and rules over all things including yourself… Oh, but you don’t want people to know that do you! Hope you don’t mind me exposing you like this but you did ask for my comments and hey I don’t bother God in the slightest and I’m here to stay so runaway and don’t bother me any other day. Ok peeps, If people follow the *MAIN* track that runs through the woods infront of the Airport that can also be accessed from Oaklands some one has cut down some trees - you can't miss them if you follow the track. By this someone has left a message that reads: Enjoying the view? If so - here's my clue.. Borrow the chainsaw and so can you!. It was signed "A.Bove" :). Anyone care to check it out? or know anything about it?.

Just wanted to say how interesting I found the Biggin Hill website. It's particularly good if it's only been going a year. I used to live in Aperfield Rd with my family but left for Birmingham in 1951 when I was 8. I had no contact with the area until last year when I helped my daughter move down from Worcestershire to Bromley and drove the hired white van through Biggin Hill on the way. When we lived there, Aperfield Rd was an unmade lane, thick with mud. My mother tells me we lived in the first house down from the main road, but was intrigued to see, when we went past the lane (yesterday on a visit to Bromley) that it is now an ordinary suburban road with bungalows! She's intrigued to see, however, that the timber shop is still there - we used to trek through the mud up to the shop in our wellies with our shoes in a bag, put our shoes on and leave our wellies in a line outside the timber shop, catch the bus to Bromley and collect our wellies on return! And now Biggin Hill is high-tech with its own website!

I remember the Hillsiders Youth Club! I can see myself dancing to - I Wanna Be Bobbie's Girl, by ?????? I remember a guy called Colin Pasco, he used to live in the valley but then moved to 1 Church Road....could he still be there? Before I was allowed to go to the youth club Christine French, Barbara Mulllens and me (of course) used to hide across the road and throw snow balls at the girls going in. Does anyone remember Brian Blundle, Malcolm Guyley two members of a group in the early sixties called The Prowlers (local). I think the Blundell family would still be in the erea (not sure of spelling) Malcolm had a brother called Brent (gorgeous), mind you Brian was a bit of a stunner with his blonde hair!!! What about the old park keeper who used to keep all the kids off the roof in the Rec - he had a limp so he didn't stand a chance at catching us. I really hope someone else out there can remember

In the 1960's a lady called Mrs Orme, set up The Hillsiders Youth Club which met every Friday in the W.I.Hall in Lebanon Gardens. It got a lot of support from the local youth and also from those of Westerham. This lovely lady also organised a carnival, whose Queen was picked from the members. Sadly Mrs Orme left the area and the Biggin Hill Social Club became the venue. I believe one David Bowie played in a group at a Youth Club dance in his teens.

the reason that no one has developed the farm at norheads is quite simply that they do not want to disturb what is buried underground.i have lived here many years and i recall in the sixties when the army cordened off the area.It was at this time that the gas was put in sealed chambers and placed underground.this was repoted in the local papers so im sure that a bit of checking will reveal the information that others have been asking about.I think it was about 1963 in winter.

This brought back lots of happy memories for me. I lived in the valley from 1953 to 1960 on Sunningvale Avenue, the only house between bottom Temples and the street opposite Jugs Hill. The valley was very pretty then. We had friends called Sue and Michael Bubb. My brother and sister, Jim and Joan went to the junior school on the Main Road, does anyone remember us?

I read with interest comments about Sarin gas located under Norheads farm.It is quite true.This was one of many sites deemed suitable by Harold Wilsons Government in the 1960's. Other chemical hazards are also located there and in Star Lane Orpington.

Speaking of local attractions, I know Tatsfield strictly speaking falls outside the Bromley borough area, but have you considered mentioning the Reptile Zoo there, "Beaver Water World"? They also have other animals, including some large aviaries. Their website can be found at http://www.nafcon.dircon.co.uk . Incidentally I think the idea of a WWII airfield museum is an excellent one, given the crucial role of Biggin Hill in 1940.

A Venture Unit is exactly what I said it is!! We meet weekly, (we have a quarterly programme) and that's about it really. We also have weekends away throughout the year. Last weekend we attended a escape and evade competiton in Yorkshire.

sarin gas is buried at the farm it is also located at many other places in the UK Bromley council allowed its burial in the 1960's

I am studying A level Geography at Bullers Wood in Chislehurst. As part of my course we have to complete a piece of coursework. I would like to say that the site is very good and I agree about Biggin Hill should have a museum, It is a shame that places like Biggin and Kenley are just left to the odd book or people of the time remembering, cos lets face it as time marches on they will not live for ever. I feel it should be remembered in a way that all ages can appreciate, and what better than to have a museum at an old ww2 air field. By the way it is a shame that the guestbook has so much dross and tripe on it (from school children)

Can I suggest to the Web Master that he does something to censor postings to the site. It is becoming a site for idiots. Perhaps one way would be to personally monitor or only accept messages which have a genuine E-mail address, in this way their ISP could notified of the content they are submitting. I can't believe such has a small place has so many visitor's! I lived there between '74 and '86, I went to Oaklands Junior and Charles Darwin, the Headmaster then was Mr Taverner and the Deputy was Mr Leigh. I'm also amazed at the amount of peopl that live in Australia who used to live in Biggin Hill. What a small world! My maiden name was FARBROTHER, not an easy one to forget! The site keeps growing and it all looks good. Although I moved away from the Old Jail in January 1971 (11 years old - happy days!), I'd love to hear from anyone who was at Cudham CE school with me from 1964 onwards. Martin Clark, do you still live at Speedwell? Also any customers of the Old Jail at that time which my parents, Bill and Margaret, use to run.

When you next update, could we please have lots more photographs eg St Marks, the rec, the pond in the rec (if it is still there). I can remember falling through the ice one winter long, long ago. What about the Nightingale Cafe, is it still there? Anyway what I would really like is a photo of my old house at 169 Main Road (Iona), maybe taken from the rec!! I come from the Sheppy family who lived in the valley from 1947 to 1959: one of the "old" families. Anyone out there remember us all? We went to Mr Huckles school and remember Mrs Comfort, Mrs Bradford and Mr Kelly. The history section totally misses out the hey day of post-war RAF Biggin Hill with it's Meteors and Hawker Hunters roaring thru the skies. Great to know I didn't dream it all!

I found this site a few months ago and think its great and has the potentail to develop into an essential local resource. I lived in Biggin Hill from 1967 - 1971 and never had the opportunity of returning to visit. I have fond memories of the entire area and remember the beautiful coutryside, although I'm sure that it has changed now. Visiting this site was by accident as I was stumbling aound the Web, but it brought back many good memories of a happy period in my life. I've got tears in my eyes. I stumbled across this site and now my whole family has seen it.My older sister,Susan,(thats her below from Nelson) spent a good part of our childhood(1954 to 1962) at "Highfield" Main Rd., two doors from the junction of Main Rd. and Sunningvale Ave.,where the Meehans lived- Dermot & Moiya (? spelling)our best friends.I remember the Primary School with Mr.Huckle & Miss Hull, Father Hickey the Catholic priest,Mr. Blundell who owned the dairy, Dusty Millar-hardware, Punch Crouch-local garage.And my parents Peter & Karole spent a few evenings at the Black Horse. We had the best playground a child could ask for - cross Main Rd, into the aerodrome property and we had acres of space to play.If anyone remembers me or my family please get in touch. I grew up in Biggin Hill, and now live just north of Los Angeles in Southern California. How strange (and eiree!!) to find a full-fledged web-site about the place. Wonderful site! We lived on Village Green Avenue from about 1964 to 1974, when the family moved to the U.S. I attended Biggin Hill Primary (fond memories of Mr. Huckle and Miss Steer) and remember the town well (at least from the perspective of a twelve year old). We live in sunny California now, but I manage to drag my American wife back to the old country every year for a couple of weeks. (I hear the primary school is now a Tesco. How depressing.)

Great website! Having only lived in Biggin Hill for 6 weeks this site has given me a good insight into the village, esp. the history. Regarding the history does anyone know of early settlements in the Hilcrest Road area.The discovery of what I think is a stone age skinning implement has aroused my interest however the history on this website doesn't go back that far. Any ideas ?!?

This is for John Sprickley. John, my Mother used to deliver milk from Norheads Farm in the days when it was taken around by horse & cart. Whilst doing this she happily smoked a pipe (pretty cool I think). Colin Townshend was my best friend. He lived opposite the Primary School. I also remember Buntings the Butcher, Lillies cnr shop next to Conroys the shoe boys!! nottoo far from Watsons Electrical. I must not forget Lomans (not sure of spelling) pet shop or Miller Hardware, which of course was not too far from the Fire Station. To end this which I must.... Having a drink or two at the Black Horse or even treking cross country (not very far) to The Old Jail for another 3 or 4....Oh! for the memories.

I have tears in my eyes!! I grew up in Bigin Hill so I have lot of wonderful memories. For eg. climbing the old Cedar Tree in the village green, which of course was next to the House Tree, Biggin Hill Primary School - Mr Huckle,Mrs Comfort and of course Miss Hull. What great fun it was to play hide- n-seek when they were building the Moving Church cnr Church St & Main Rd. Oh how I could go on and on.... I lived at "IONA" 169 Main Rd. My house backed onto the rec. I left in 1968 for Australia and have lived here every since (great place). Three days ago (13/07/98) I arrived in Aust. 30 years ago, so finding this on the net was just fabulous. Please, if anyone out there can remember me or my family let me know ASAP - thank you

Great to see a site for my home town, lessens the home sickness! Maybe a webcam of the Main Road would be good. Are there any plans for some of the local papers to publish on the site?

Great Site - found the history really good, but am a bit jealous because I had intended to do something similar. Still, why invent the wheel, I'll make do with running a link from my own site. I have lived in Churchside Close in the Valley for years, and spent the first 20 or so years working on the airport before going out and getting a proper job. Now running my own business as a Independent Financial and Mortgage Adviser at CIC Financial Solutions, in the village (or is it a Town now?) Would really like to see more old photos of the area - any chance of these in the History section

Hello to you all, I also came in via Yahoo uk. I think the local events page is a bit sparse at the moment, how about a mention for the Biggin Hill Festival on Saturday 4/7 and Sunday 5/7. Found the site on Yahoo; lived in Berry's Green and Jail Lane for 17 years - my parents ran the Old Jail Inn for 13 years until 1970. Still I didn't know some of the history shown on the site. Owe my career to the airport. Very good site indeed.

Encounter in the Supermarket. I saw him looking at me as I passed the frozen peas And felt his gaze still on me as I bought my piece of cheese. We encountered one another beside the jars of jam And he very nearly smiled at me when I bought my piece of ham. His step was quite unsteady but I put that down to age I felt his eyes upon me with a really friendly gaze. But it was when we reached the check out near the cigarettes and wine That his smile was most disarming and his hand reached out for mine. We were close. I reached and touched him. He then went rather coy But I'd lost my heart completely to a lovely baby boy.
